The Saint Barnabas School for the Blind, located in Nicosia, is the only educational institution of its kind in Cyprus. Its establishment in 1929 marked the beginning of special education in Cyprus and furthermore the education of individuals with visual impairments. Until 1957, the School operated within the framework of the charitable model. With Cyprus' independence in 1960, a new period of development and enhancement of the School's role began, transforming it into a genuinely equitable institution among the public schools. The school provides primary, secondary, and adult education. Currently, it provides services to 132 students (young and adult learners) on the premises and support services to 150 students attending the mainstream school settings, with a total of 57 staff and teachers. Some of the activities offered include empowerment and well-being classes, a help and support centre (Telephony Department), adult education with 35 different subjects (including computers, Greek, English, and Braille languages, music, cooking, arts and handicraft lessons, fashion, carpentry, theatre, dancing, gymnastics, archery, gardening, and graphic design), support services for young students attending the mainstream school settings (material adaptation/ Braille, teacher support, environmental audits etc), Braille printing studio, music studio for recording and transcription services in Braille language, psychological counselling, and a program for deaf-blind people.
